Um... the most difficult part of starting a conversation with a stranger is simply breaking the ice, you don't know them and they don't know you but honestly outside of that once it gets started things are either good or bad... You can tell what they are thinking by the way they act, if they are looking at you and asking questions then either they are good at feigning interest or they are genuinely interested... and lastly Body Language tells a whole story in and of itself you can tell if they are eager to escape the conversation or if they are truly into it, you can tell if they are finding you interesting or boring, and you can also tell when they are going to leave the conversation.

Breaking the ice. I tend to prefer something cheesey or kitch, that will make them smile as well (if they appreciate that stuff) for example, at a party, throw ice to the floor, and stamp on it, making a comment about breaking the ice.

-The eyes. Always the eyes. You can also read their body language - arms crossed is often a sign they're not engaged, but it can be a sign of them just being tired, as I often do it when tired. So yeah, eyes and body language.

- Sort of covered some, but you can see if they like you, for example leaning towards you, touching you lightly on the arm or shoulder etc. Also you can tell their emotions, if they're happy or sad etc.
